Department of Defense awards School of Medicine’s Kath Bogie grant to work on spinal cord injuries

The Department of Defense’s Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program awarded Kath Bogie, adjunct assistant professor of orthopaedics, a $561,850 grant.

Bogie, who is a principal investigator with the Advanced Platform Technology Center of Excellence at the Louis Stokes Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center, will work on developing a personalized model for pressure ulcer prevention acutely following spinal cord injury.

The research will be part of Spinal Cord Injury Research Program and will have the potential to improve the health and well being of people living with spinal cord injuries, including military service members and veterans.

Pressure ulcers can form soon after injury and can have devastating effects on those living with spinal cord injuries, so prevention and risk-assessment tools are needed.

Bogie’s team will monitor all incidences of tissue compromise or breakdown to develop preliminary models for pressure ulcer prediction.
