In November, SAGES teaching fellow Benjamin Sperry traveled to San Francisco to be a panelist at the annual meeting of the American Society of Criminology.
In his presentation, Sperry discussed a SAGES seminar he developed on the theme of race and incarceration.
The course involves two groups of students—17 CWRU undergraduates and a similar number of students from Lorain Correctional Institute, a state prison—who follow the same syllabus and engage together in a series of teleconferences and in-person workshops. The seminar emerged from Sperry’s academic interest in the history of race in America and also from his years of teaching incarcerated students.
