Music education’s Matthew Garrett publishes on critical thinking in music classrooms

Matthew GarrettMatthew Garrett, assistant professor of music education and director of choirs, celebrated the release of articles and research in three publications this year. His articles were focused on developing critical thinking skills in school music classrooms.

In October 2013, Garrett’s article, “An Examination of Critical Thinking Skills in High School Choral Rehearsals,” was published in Journal of Research in Music Education, one of the premier academic journals in music education.

In April, his research on critical thinking was featured in the National Association for Music Education magazine, Teaching Music.

To end the academic year, his article, “Teaching for Transfer: Developing Critical Thinking Skills with Adolescent Singers,” was published in the May issue of Choral Journal, the national magazine for the American Choral Directors Association.
