Mustafa Unal, a doctoral candidate in mechanical and aerospace engineering, recently was selected to receive the prestigious Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies (FACSS) Student Award.
Unal was selected based on his academic achievements and quality of submitted research paper at SciX conference.
He works in the lab of Ozan Akkus, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering.
In his research, Unal has developed a novel assessment method of cartilage quality using Raman spectroscopy as an early detection of Osteoarthritis (OA). The broader impact of his research lies upon diagnosis of people who are under the risk of OA.
SciX 2016, organized by FACSS, will be held Sept. 18-23 in Minneapolis. With this international recognition, Unal will present his research during a special award session highlighting young scientists.
Last month, Unal also was honored internationally with the Osteoarthritis Young Investigator Award presented by Orthopaedic Research Society. This award is a highly selective international award presented to only one young scientist who may be a graduate student, post-doctoral fellow or assistant professor from around the world.
