Doctoral candidate receives biomedical science excellence award

Tom Bulea received the 2012 Doctoral Excellence Award in Biomedical Sciences [Biomedical Engineering] from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. The Doctoral Excellence Award in Biomedical Sciences is established to recognize exceptional research and scholarship in PhD programs university-wide.

Bulea was recognized for “highly original work that is an unusually significant contribution to the field” of biomedical engineering. Only one student per PhD program can be selected per year, and a PhD program might not have any student selected in a particular year.

Bulea received his bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University and his master’s degree in biomedical engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 2008 and will earn his doctoral degree here in 2012.

His research interests are the intersection of functional electrical stimulation and controllable exoskeletons, functional augmentation of movement and biomechanics of gait.
