Lynn T. Singer, deputy provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, has appointed Shannon B. Lundeen as Case Western Reserve’s new director of the Flora Stone Mather Center for Women. Lundeen succeeds Dorothy Miller, who is retiring June 30.
“Shannon is a very dynamic individual,” Singer said. “It is clear that she understands the function and extent of women’s center throughout the country and clearly conveyed the responsibilities of those centers. Her understanding of women’s issues provides a strong foundation for her vision of the future of women’s centers, especially ours.”
Lundeen, who arrives on campus in August, has worked at the University of Pennsylvania for the last eight years as associate director of the Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies Program and the Alice Paul Center for Research on Gender, Sexuality, and Women. Previously, she served as secretary-treasurer of the Society for Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy.
Lundeen received her BA with Honors in Philosophy and Women’s Studies from Colgate University and earned an MA and PhD in Philosophy and an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies from Stony Brook University. She specializes in Feminist Theory, Queer Theory and Sexuality Studies and Social and Political Philosophy.
Case Western Reserve law professor Beatrice “Jessie” Hill led the search committee, which considered three-dozen candidates before on-campus sessions with finalists. Hill said she and other committee members were impressed by Lundeen’s “passion and willingness to create growth and vision for the center’s next 10 years.”
Lundeen and her husband have two children.
